The <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">Animationmentor</span> journey comes to conclusion with festivities akin to an Oscars award. It has been an exciting 18 months full of challenges and new learning experiences. The <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">Animationmentor</span> program is a success. I feel that I had gotten my money's worth, but more importantly, the new friends I made there is what is truly special about this program. My approach to animation has certainly risen to a much higher level, I have learned to appreciate the importance of planning and of entertaining performance.<br /><br />The graduation ceremony was held at Fort Mason in San Francisco. The <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">Animationmentor</span> crew have done a fantastic job of transforming the theater to not only <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">accommodate</span> everyone and their guests, but to decorate it and plan it to make us feel as though we're receiving our Oscar awards. Carlos <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4">Baena's</span> opening entrance as a quasi-<span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5">Na'vi</span> character from the blockbuster movie Avatar was funny and unexpected. Shawn Kelly gave a heart warming speech on the importance of support of family members to the aspiring animator. Bobby Beck <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_6">directed</span> his speech to the amazing accomplishment of not only the graduates but also the hard work of his AM team members, and deservedly so.<br /><br />Awards were handed out for different categories that the students and mentors voted on. I'm proud to say that many of the <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_7">recipients</span> well deserved it and that I had the honor of sharing a class or two with many of them. After that we lined up as <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_8">rehearsed</span> and each one received a Diploma of Advanced Studies in Character Animation.<br /><br />Afterwards we left the theater to the lobby area and congratulated each other and mingled with everyone. Everyone was on a high of excitement and the sense of accomplishment of something desired and sought after. Seeing so many of my classmates and fellow students for the first time face to face was truly special. My wife and son were also present and they seem to have enjoyed the show. I also got to see my mentors from classes 3, 4, & 5 Kevin Koch, Nicole Herr, and Kenny Roy.<br /><br />At 8:00pm sharp the theater was emptied and many of us took the party to Gordon <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_9">Biersch</span> where AM had reserved the upper floor for us till midnight. I think we stayed past midnight. No one wanted it to end.<br /><br />Monday and Tuesday a group of us graduates went on studio tours of <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_10">ILM</span> and <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_11">PDI</span> <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_12">DreamWorks</span> that I had arranged a couple of months earlier. It was fantastic! And a great way to end an exciting journey.<br /><br />All that is left now is to gain some professional experience in the field of character animation and to create something truly special and memorable. In this field, success truly lies in the journey rather than the destination. I am looking forward to embark on this journey confident that my arsenal of knowledge, commitment and passion will take me farther than I have imagined.<br /><br /><br /></span><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dw8mz81Xst0J4ZtUuoBuQxikg0jjNg5yfQALYPhju4sprAGxiR3bXzzzdhnBmjMxrs_K1Y3JDtWA7Sa29cJWQ' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe>Dharhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05569381869808242879noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6317675630674465583.post-52933608992312554712009-11-23T22:08:00.000-08:002009-12-19T15:24:43.386-08:00CTN Expo 1st Annual. Burbank, Ca.<span style="font-family:arial;">The short film production is ongoing, this week I will final the last half. Since this is not really a blog about each and every step of my learning process (or so it turned out to be), I thought I'd share this milestone event with some pictures. On Friday morning, Nov 20, 2009, I drove down to Los Angeles to attend the first annual Creative Talent Network Animation Expo. It was my first animation related expo and I went simply to take pulse of events like this. I had no intention of making contacts with any studios since I didn't even have a demo reel to show, but it was great meeting some of the industry legends and recharge my batteries with their positive statements and technical hints.<br /><br /></span><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_S7bajZHOyKePkX3ug5mB8YmeJ79QUWlC_U62hP4ti-9HM5gb8rtLROCoas9lU1-mm_lwyZb2GMEu81PdiRV9jvs2LuWEG3vRlvpeWqGZB85BWVafvpi7oxMtnstMOt3nztCQ-mdUmH5P/s1600-h/Gary+Goldman+Don+Bluth.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_S7bajZHOyKePkX3ug5mB8YmeJ79QUWlC_U62hP4ti-9HM5gb8rtLROCoas9lU1-mm_lwyZb2GMEu81PdiRV9jvs2LuWEG3vRlvpeWqGZB85BWVafvpi7oxMtnstMOt3nztCQ-mdUmH5P/s320/Gary+Goldman+Don+Bluth.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5412386870786377234" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-family:arial;">Meeting with the legendary Don Bluth and Gary Goldman on the first day pretty much summed up the positive experience of the entire trip. They had a booth in the back promoting Don's tutorial DVDs. I applied at Don Bluth Studios back in the early 1980's when I was fresh out of junior college and Don had just opened his studio. Starry eyed with dreams of making it in the industry, I had hoped that they (or any animation studio for that matter) would give me a chance and hire me. Although the dream was not realized, meeting him for the first time had a positive impact mixed with a bit of nostalgia for days long gone. I told them a little bit about myself and that I was enrolled in animationmentor.com upon which they both said "You'll make it". I wonder if they know how much their words meant to me.<br /><br /></span><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5Ikhi3vNx5rykWP7EYroOtSDqGiwc9p7gd537kk8Q7n45jXieUmET5i8qFH9moqtJXxDm8mFpxVFTc_yuzFv80eXknBmLeqTHPz3054Obm5aek6yHGWTORxZOadO_kOUA06AsMDKfYKJ-/s1600-h/Jason+Ryan.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; My mentor Kevin Koch and school mate Harry Porudominsky bumped into me, it was nice seeing them again. Many animationmentor students were present, not a surprise, but I was surprised when animator Tony Bancroft (one of the directors on Mulan) gave good mention to animationmentor students that their work stands out from the rest because they focus on performance (acting). These are very encouraging words from a respected personality.<br /><br />The high light of the trip was meeting the legendary Eric Goldberg. A friendly, unassuming and an engaging fellow. Schoolmate Miurika Valery took this short clip of myself and Mr. Goldberg chatting about his work on a Schweppes commercial where he animated Nagel-esque style characters.<br /><br />The proverbial cherry on the cake was meeting my Class 4 mentor Nicole Herr. A beautiful, smart, and talented lady who has contributed tremendously to animation and to advancing my quest to become an animator. She left me with great words of wisdom about making it in the industry. Greg is from Toronto, Canada and his first experience was with traditional 2D animation some 16 years ago with the Warner Brothers cartoons. After that he's been with DreamWorks working on their major hits and currently working on their lates production "How to train your Dragon".<br /><br />I feel fortunate that Greg, who has mastered both 2D and 3D animation, will be mentoring me this semester. There is a lot to be said about animators with 2D background. There is a certain finesse about their work flow and attitude that I can relate being one who started with traditional 2D animation.<br /><br />Some of my ex classmates are with me again, Sandy Sze and Jude Brownbill, both excellent animators by their own right and they motivate me tremendously to do better and attain higher quality from my work.<br /></span><br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDSXHgbFyS6hS73B9uhplpUj5CuR4swRMGySDVPa9SAqBbdw23P6HPI2ehMtgUZydL0ELMjdGlQBleIc0Vpk8ZPGI7bsTEC-GpHT7SpmVytRPIF-VSD83nW1WpM-fJ-pMIhA-C7kgQGkbC/s1600-h/Madagascar_2_Teaser_Poster.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; The story development part was most exciting with input from mentor and students alike, which helped shape the story into a more polished and manageble content. In this class there is a feeling of separation from the previous classes, not much nimation went on but also the impending last class and graduation probably added to the feeling of, not so much isolation, but a sense of maturation. Dealing with story, script, scene setup, and a production workflow, took most of my time. I never thought the intensity level would be so high.<br /><br />Needless to say, Kenny Roy proved to be a wonderful mentor, his dedication, enthusiasm, trained eye and immense knowledge of film making were instrumental in shaping my workflow and film development.<br /><br />To keep my animation appetite satisfied I did this quick gag for fun and keep the animation juices flowing.<br /><br /><br /></span><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dzfvkjFD3NtE36j57bHHRvJWjq526LP34mAK2Wuu7qKA12pzaGwHBIauLL_OmBbUp8QZcz15K0N0MXzI-EuQw' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe>Dharhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05569381869808242879noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6317675630674465583.post-75361663479003365012009-07-27T07:59:00.000-07:002009-07-27T08:35:56.478-07:00Story - Robert McKee<span style="font-family: arial;"><a href="http://www.mckeestory.com/">Robert McKee's Story seminar</a> couldn't have come at a better time just as we're beginning the pre-production semester at Animation Mentor where story development is the assignment. Robert McKee's book "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Story-Substance-Structure-Principles-Screenwriting/dp/0060391685">Story; Substance, Structure, Style and the Principles of Screenwriting</a>" is one of the recommended reading material at AM and this timely seminar helped me purchase the book (in hard cover only per Mr. McKee's specific instructions because this is a reference book and not some book to be read once and discarded), CD audio (since I don't like to read) and the script to the movie Casablanca because it was being offered as part of a package at the seminar. The seminar was three days long, 12 hours a day event at the Gateway Holliday Inn on Van Ness in San Francisco. 12 hours a day of sitting in an auditorium that Mr. McKee requested the temperature be lowered so that we won't fall asleep was brutal but his entertaining style of delivery kept everyone's attention. However, this is the last of the three day seminars for Mr. McKee has opted for the 4 day seminars that he used to gve in Italy where they cherish their longer lunch break.<br /><br />There is not much I can say about the content of the seminar since no recording was allowed but I did come away with greater appreciation of what makes an entertaining story and how to apply the principles of great stories to my own work. The information in the seminar was overwhelming in their quantity and quality, but having the book close by makes it easy to keep the principles I learned accessible. I have already changed my short film story based on the lessons I learned and I am glad I did.<br /><br />If there is anyway you can attend Mr. McKee's seminar, I highly recommend that you do. It will be worth it.<br /><br /></span><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEQFc6xaZtAma90r8PZgU2oofJEfHCxFvpEusOzeEYk2TrjtcunIJUol8Z5dXXKZvShgriH_peTFrHb8_i8qPfvSN3y6VvOHyAS9UmMnDQekRFsK03-3BDj1nm4AukrrIYTee5DpWYepBe/s1600-h/DSC01974.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEQFc6xaZtAma90r8PZgU2oofJEfHCxFvpEusOzeEYk2TrjtcunIJUol8Z5dXXKZvShgriH_peTFrHb8_i8qPfvSN3y6VvOHyAS9UmMnDQekRFsK03-3BDj1nm4AukrrIYTee5DpWYepBe/s320/DSC01974.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5363155468823330162" border="0" /></a>Dharhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05569381869808242879noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6317675630674465583.post-78315197754662873002009-07-20T18:35:00.000-07:002009-07-24T21:14:32.803-07:00Animation Dream Tour<span style="font-family:arial;">Monday, 7-13-2009 Animation Mentor students and alumni tour the 3 major animation houses in the Bay Area.</span><span style="font-family:arial;"> This is a most motivating event in my animation journey.</span><span style="font-family:arial;"> Planning the tours was a collaborative effort between myself and Heather Kilber and it began the day after the AM BBQ event.<br /></span><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEio3FZMppwvsvl-EqRHvzgkAJLKEZfioMX43D_iNuWEdRdqRmTaMm6W1gOsdbzZ1_P3oqVP2rLydDuGqApaxivb-7qErrN29r2_fzu7ryAKE_w_5ypt1CXfJNmP9kcnrzb6ruOZrKbrwWfI/s1600-h/DSC01910+%28Small%29.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEio3FZMppwvsvl-EqRHvzgkAJLKEZfioMX43D_iNuWEdRdqRmTaMm6W1gOsdbzZ1_P3oqVP2rLydDuGqApaxivb-7qErrN29r2_fzu7ryAKE_w_5ypt1CXfJNmP9kcnrzb6ruOZrKbrwWfI/s320/DSC01910+%28Small%29.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5360724243499774562" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiU4BC39PnFcJwWYp6X7z8phJCqX7UR1Ku86W9z3MXY45tzo9TMjgXGKhVC6HmkrIjEnRjwDKvdnKvpBtvPGIXThF1X00dEwFt8kGhDLKEcrSXiU-8zvCzL-7s3RN6Py3a2j22Xxm5PkT-w/s1600-h/DSC01914+%28Small%29.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiU4BC39PnFcJwWYp6X7z8phJCqX7UR1Ku86W9z3MXY45tzo9TMjgXGKhVC6HmkrIjEnRjwDKvdnKvpBtvPGIXThF1X00dEwFt8kGhDLKEcrSXiU-8zvCzL-7s3RN6Py3a2j22Xxm5PkT-w/s320/DSC01914+%28Small%29.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5360724138877257826" border="0" /></a><span style="font-family:arial;">Meeting the legendary animator Victor Navone, who was also our tour guide, is an honor. I do know its about story development for the short film we're supposed to produce, that's about it. However, since I have visited Class 5 students' workspace in the past, I have been coming up with story ideas and concepts for the short film and am excited to pitch them in class and see how things go. Now the short film criteria is not that it has to be 30 seconds long, that's unrealistic because the length of the film is (should be) dictated by the story, so, the rule is that only 30 seconds of the film will be polished at the end of Class 6 with the intention to add it to the demo reel for presentation to prospective employers. That is good news because the more I tried to shrink my stories to fit 30 se</span><span style="font-family:arial;">conds the m</span><span style="font-family:arial;">ore they ceased to be entertaining. I will, however, try and have an entertaining short film that is approximately 30 seconds long.<br /></span><br /><span style="font-family:arial;"><a href="http://www.kennyroy.com/">Kenny Roy</a> is my mentor this semester and during the first class introductions I was positively overwhelmed by his high strung enthusiasm for a class that he has taught for many years at Animation Mentor. Kenny brings a unique talent to the mentor cadre in the fact that he owns <a href="http://www.arconyx.com/">Arconyx Animation Studio</a><a href="http://www.arconyx.com/">s</a> <span style="font-family:arial;">plus the fact that he animated on hits such as King Kong, Garfield, Scooby Doo2: Monsters Unleashed, and as a dustbuster on Marco Polo: Return to Xanadu.</span></span><span style="font-family:arial;"> His enthusiastic attitude, experience and broad knowledge of the industry as a whole intrigues me immensely and I feel lucky to have him as my mentor.<br /><br />There is not going to be much animation (if at all) in this class so don't expect any work. However, I may post some small projects here and there that I will be doing to hone my animation skills and Maya knowledge.<br /></span><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjf_cmiZJIAGEg6f61PZzx_PWFYQewt9NUF2eOYGMTVH9r7CpYQPEkDcXLd4Q9y83m5NbANOunc_EjTTQpQFTZg5vMO6G6KWT5Hyr0oPNXmyfg8Q4u8O_fFoVAbyPjKEhrZaqB02gETK0R8/s1600-h/king+kong+poster+ned.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 216px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjf_cmiZJIAGEg6f61PZzx_PWFYQewt9NUF2eOYGMTVH9r7CpYQPEkDcXLd4Q9y83m5NbANOunc_EjTTQpQFTZg5vMO6G6KWT5Hyr0oPNXmyfg8Q4u8O_fFoVAbyPjKEhrZaqB02gETK0R8/s320/king+kong+poster+ned.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5354429695611433090" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjl7ICwX21LAI3DmGPn5d9KKWew6GinwUIR3DQt0SiwvNGidecxSZBUY9abfgQBa1cUQSDEuxkJ7AXnTq4YKEb2le08X5ZrdQQphMghRWiG6CfTyWNeWlPrfg6aYRMFhf3XZUX3Te9ddmgb/s1600-h/garfield_ver5.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 234px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjl7ICwX21LAI3DmGPn5d9KKWew6GinwUIR3DQt0SiwvNGidecxSZBUY9abfgQBa1cUQSDEuxkJ7AXnTq4YKEb2le08X5ZrdQQphMghRWiG6CfTyWNeWlPrfg6aYRMFhf3XZUX3Te9ddmgb/s320/garfield_ver5.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5354429825771778114" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNZqwTFyxE0uSHcWzZhdRklHC_i9JADJM6_4iGQOVVH5PxNAq1IGrrD2PsDXytAPkix7TZhUAln5HWELFstmy7yaE6zwHfP0b2YSuA0A4ms6Z8RagRpUEB3ScbeG5MFtfjgKrt0SfIh3hE/s1600-h/scooby_doo_two.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 217px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNZqwTFyxE0uSHcWzZhdRklHC_i9JADJM6_4iGQOVVH5PxNAq1IGrrD2PsDXytAPkix7TZhUAln5HWELFstmy7yaE6zwHfP0b2YSuA0A4ms6Z8RagRpUEB3ScbeG5MFtfjgKrt0SfIh3hE/s320/scooby_doo_two.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5354429986399273714" border="0" /></a>Dharhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05569381869808242879noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6317675630674465583.post-67663977277460285942009-06-20T14:41:00.000-07:002009-06-20T14:58:21.178-07:00End of Class 4<span style="font-family: arial;">Class 4 has been intense in its content as well as the amount of concentration and detail work it demanded. Nicole Herr has been phenomenal in her approach to the work critique and informative Q&A sessions. The class covered subjects like animating dialogue, facial expressions, storytelling through cuts, animating multi characters, advanced dialogue work through, principles of entertainment, subtext and subtlety, design applied to animation, and a walk through with Victor Navone from dialogue to finished animation which was quite encouraging to watch.<br /><br />Here is the two person dialogue exercise that I worked on. I had to make sure that my dialogue choice not be too long lest I do not finish it in time.<br /><br /><br /></span><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dxlOU8qYqDuU0EuVnl9gAwXZtwncN9p6t19LZHeMwa89XG5STG0NOXotSEHdNLB77AOm0KyjDcWvN_A0k9t2w' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe><br /><br /><span style="font-family: arial;">The polishing phase is ongoing, but I think experience is what I now need to hone my polishing skills and train my eyes to see the workflow in advance. The next class will be about pre-production of a short film, a very short film (30 seconds). In the meantime I am going to enjoy the one week break.</span>Dharhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05569381869808242879noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6317675630674465583.post-61789513611862033142009-06-01T09:13:00.000-07:002009-06-01T10:08:54.409-07:00Class 410<span style="font-family: arial;">June 1st, one month since my last post</span>. <span style="font-family: arial;">The two person dialogue is in refining stage (one step after blocking). Time is fast becoming a rare commodity and in a couple of weeks will be the end of the semester. Nicole's Q&A sessions is something I look forward to because she fills it with useful and informative lessons. The time I enjoy the most is the "torture time" as she refers to it. That is when she'd randomly cam a student and gives him/er a line describing the start of a scene then the student builds the story from there. She then would cam the next student who must keep the continuity of the story and so on. This is an invaluable practice to exercise the imagination and story telling techniques in preparation for the next class.<br /><br />Other happenings; watched the <a href="http://www.battleforterra.com/">Battle for Terra</a>, a CG animated feature that my Class 3 mentor, Kevin Koch and AM student Harry Porudominsky worked on. The movie was good but by no means a blockbuster. It is, however, a major accomplishment for the independent film house Snoot (toons spelled backwards). I think the story lacked a way to relate to the alien characters. A humorous situation or some drama that could bring the alien world to terms that we can understand could have helped establish an emotional link with the characters. The animation, as good as it was, felt restrained (a director's choice), to the chagrin of the animators who were working on it I'm sure. I find it strange, in this golden age of CG animated features, that story (or great story for that matter) can still be overlooked by some producers. An entire section has been dedicated to story in the animation bible <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Illusion_Of_Life">The Illusion of Life</a>. So how could an animation producer miss this fundamental part of movie making? <a href="http://www.pixar.com/">PIXAR</a> built its foundation on story and they make no secret of it. They are enjoying the same success that Disney enjoyed in their hayday. Just watched <a href="http://disney.go.com/disneypictures/up/">UP</a> last weekend in theater and it is proving to be yet another hit. "A good story cannot be ruined by poor animation, but neither can a poor story be saved by the very best animation"; (The Illusion of Life, chapter 14, p. 367) It is that simple premise that makes memorable animated features. I can only hope that future production houses keep that as the minimum standard to adhere to, especially in today's society of jaded movie goers and skyrocketting production costs.<br /></span>Dharhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05569381869808242879noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6317675630674465583.post-21972923906430995812009-05-01T18:16:00.000-07:002009-05-01T22:49:10.995-07:00The Ottoman<span style="font-family:arial;">The Ottoman is a project of animator Mike Stamm. It has been by far the most informative and challenging term. Kevin Koch is a special mentor. He gives the longest and most detailed ecritiques than any other mentor, by far. The immense knowledge that he shared with the class will be with me forever. No moment was wasted in any of the Q&As, that's because he always came prepared with notes or a topic he or the students wanted to discuss.<br /><br />The weekly lectures were phenomenal in their content. They were given by leading industry animators. The subjects covered pantomime acting, body language and gestures, secondary actions, phrasing, dialogue, eye blinks, entertainment principles, hand gestures, and sincerity in acting. Some of the lectures were step by step walk through while others covered broad principles.<br /><br />I am not going to post the dialogue shot that I worked on since it won't be finished until the first quarter of the next semester where we'll be working on facial expressions, so, stay tuned for that one.<br /><br />On to Class 4<br /></span>Dharhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05569381869808242879noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6317675630674465583.post-80538291692685211112009-02-15T13:52:00.000-08:002009-02-16T10:30:22.750-08:00Class 3 Week 7<span style="font-family:arial;">End of pantomime assignment. In this exercise we attempt to show thought and change of emotion via body poses. The absence of facial expressions forces us to express attitudes through body posture. I chose to parody The Matrix, since Stwie has no facial features except for the eyes, I thought it was appropriate to re-enact that scene from The Matrix when Neo freaks out as his mouth closes shut and disappears.<br /><br /><br /></span><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dy1H5O_lpGX3gA_EXdQLEToQbCvrD_KiP7bLh3BV-9rkxuMuJ2oGonvE8zq_3rB-rwCoElZUjtCEBSz0-AYzw' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe><br /><br /><span style="font-family:arial;">During this time I had a chanc</span><span style="font-family:arial;">e to visit with my mentor, Kevin Koch where he gave me a tour at his work at <a href="http://www.snootfx.com/">Snoot FX</a> in Los Angeles. The level of talent there was intimidating to me, yet inspiring at the same time. Kevin showed me a shot he was animating, and even when the character was in proxy mode, it is amazing how good animation looks so pleasing even on an unfinished model (i.e. a model with no texture and with low poly). We had sushi for lunch at a pizzaria?! Harry Porudominsky, a fellow AM student and an animator at Snoot FX also joined us.<br /></span><br /><span style="font-family:arial;"><br /></span><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjF5zXf-qBm_7yj5a7Ukcv0ih0np564bAnZK7Vph70k_v4eWd_vIyzi0iaCbsd8OZ0HL-wX9CIh9g2cSXXt3fO-omILIjaVfTMUcxMe05qUYOhJbe7r8R4SgeLxGldjz71trvOJkorwZ6Lx/s1600-h/Dhar+Harry+Kevin+%28Small%29.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjF5zXf-qBm_7yj5a7Ukcv0ih0np564bAnZK7Vph70k_v4eWd_vIyzi0iaCbsd8OZ0HL-wX9CIh9g2cSXXt3fO-omILIjaVfTMUcxMe05qUYOhJbe7r8R4SgeLxGldjz71trvOJkorwZ6Lx/s320/Dhar+Harry+Kevin+%28Small%29.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5303151646149908098" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><span style="font-family:arial;"><br /><br /><br /><br /></span><br /><span style="font-family:arial;"><br /><br /><br /><br /></span><br /><span style="font-family:arial;"><br /><br />I also had the pleasure of visiting Casey McDermott, my co student from Class 1, who landed a job at Rhythm & Hues. I switched places with another student and my mentor now is <a href="http://synchrolux.com/">Kevin Koch</a>. A 13 year animation veteran who gave up neuroscience and doctoring to become an animator. There is something about Kevin' no nonsense approach of critiquing that attracts me. He dissects his students' work with the precision and detail of a brain surgeon. I am old school and his approach suits me fine. I learn more from a drill seargent style than I would from 'explore your options' type. I feel that I should only explore my options AFTER mastering the foundations and principles of acting and animation.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:arial;">Kevin worked on all the hand-drawn films ("Prince of Egypt" to "Sinbad"), clawing his way from the clean-up department to the animation department on "Spirit." Transitioned to CG for "Shrek 2" and then "Madagascar" and "Over the Hedge".<br /></span><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihs3jvGQMtlA5bCKfkI7QhNwgi1pF18k0O55FhSZA8DdIOjb-02sfWLSII0nWXVr7FYygbYaq193JEZm26xIxP-r-CfdPov-Br41E1Q_nchv6WhPx5q8FxkqVKS2vxzjkEq72gyErQBJtH/s1600-h/sinbad_legend_of_the_seven_seas.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 216px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihs3jvGQMtlA5bCKfkI7QhNwgi1pF18k0O55FhSZA8DdIOjb-02sfWLSII0nWXVr7FYygbYaq193JEZm26xIxP-r-CfdPov-Br41E1Q_nchv6WhPx5q8FxkqVKS2vxzjkEq72gyErQBJtH/s320/sinbad_legend_of_the_seven_seas.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5292322504299290002" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPiPKKe8FZ0zYrRuS-Y2Ed-rwvk2IZzkauaUl1FjZmmnx-roETjavEme48I3KJFijNevztqjbGhSEzVVr8CneccTAHxS7-fjN5SEIXmNUV7IFY5nONDUQbwRd9Uk3cnaImE6eLq8ZlFpOF/s1600-h/over_the_hedge.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 216px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPiPKKe8FZ0zYrRuS-Y2Ed-rwvk2IZzkauaUl1FjZmmnx-roETjavEme48I3KJFijNevztqjbGhSEzVVr8CneccTAHxS7-fjN5SEIXmNUV7IFY5nONDUQbwRd9Uk3cnaImE6eLq8ZlFpOF/s320/over_the_hedge.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5292322831770198498" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkoWBbhl9cr_kccLrZi4nt4TFx7W7uRcAdNBrx0TEXy-3AOAHe5-YrYrBymRtZisO2rMdIPEEScO95AeikP9b-KGT_D8jGoKxBVTyiSY22EYUebp8qh2FETTKCbm1CPaisMudcjLnEkeGi/s1600-h/Cartoons_Shrek_2_001557_9.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 256px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkoWBbhl9cr_kccLrZi4nt4TFx7W7uRcAdNBrx0TEXy-3AOAHe5-YrYrBymRtZisO2rMdIPEEScO95AeikP9b-KGT_D8jGoKxBVTyiSY22EYUebp8qh2FETTKCbm1CPaisMudcjLnEkeGi/s320/Cartoons_Shrek_2_001557_9.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5292322944010805106" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgk-c1oG4oqMqPcmZ-SBe88iU0s69fBl0z8Tf4NdBNKbR7RWyFdxjEy2jn4vrSvYCtTN7DxWEjZZziFsfY5ghtM-A02KZTfyiTpqWABx4vTBmSU8nUxxnHE4BQVMhaWUq_bwlwU4fdPduNM/s1600-h/madagascar_ver7.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 217px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgk-c1oG4oqMqPcmZ-SBe88iU0s69fBl0z8Tf4NdBNKbR7RWyFdxjEy2jn4vrSvYCtTN7DxWEjZZziFsfY5ghtM-A02KZTfyiTpqWABx4vTBmSU8nUxxnHE4BQVMhaWUq_bwlwU4fdPduNM/s320/madagascar_ver7.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5292323082881177346" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2jR6xiaDITXQ5urhntqx1yhDv99r3szDXi820RoR5fbmnY5hYU_VrN7_jFTgToV8_8dNSEpTg-kQmJ3olv5m5jFgXi7xn8SmNRQGRPReKsEUkfPuhkEYQjZXrsqC4cYYVXBfYyFE4v1YR/s1600-h/prince_of_egypt_ver3.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 215px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2jR6xiaDITXQ5urhntqx1yhDv99r3szDXi820RoR5fbmnY5hYU_VrN7_jFTgToV8_8dNSEpTg-kQmJ3olv5m5jFgXi7xn8SmNRQGRPReKsEUkfPuhkEYQjZXrsqC4cYYVXBfYyFE4v1YR/s320/prince_of_egypt_ver3.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5292322341978955154" border="0" /></a></div>Dharhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05569381869808242879noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6317675630674465583.post-13000178411112633092009-01-07T21:56:00.000-08:002009-01-07T22:29:24.760-08:00Class 3<span style="font-family:arial;">The Christmas and New Year holidays went by uneventful, which happens as one grows into middle age, I'm fine with. I actually took the time to do some illustration art that I put in a new <a href="http://patricknagel.blogspot.com/">blog</a>. The start of Class 3 was tonight and the level of talent of my classmates went considerably up, which is exactly the kind of stimulating challenge that I need to improve my animation. </span> <span style="font-family:arial;"> <a href="http://www.sternio.com/am/index.html">Mike Stern</a> is the mentor who is also one of the first graduates of Animation Mentor, which puts him in a unique position of knowing what the students go through. Mike is currently an animator at DreamWorks. Under his belt is an impressive collection of blockbuster hits such as Bee Movie, Kung Fu Panda and Monsters vs. Aliens. He is currently working on How to Train Your Dragon due in 2010.</span><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdDdKW3IxFVEPYUNSUAVJhj4F5VfRqhPZedNLUZtdnM7e2ToMsCiGJq3RmWql1cR5LzHD5Hzg50UeAMBHwOqczcR_Qe7eW-22tXooCxsXW_CgrUGl7LLrRqwycC43UwxzdwpksZOpwcjQe/s1600-h/BeeMoviePoster_000.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 216px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdDdKW3IxFVEPYUNSUAVJhj4F5VfRqhPZedNLUZtdnM7e2ToMsCiGJq3RmWql1cR5LzHD5Hzg50UeAMBHwOqczcR_Qe7eW-22tXooCxsXW_CgrUGl7LLrRqwycC43UwxzdwpksZOpwcjQe/s320/BeeMoviePoster_000.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5288805743867996722" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUluQ-ku1QyOjvO9Pi-Hyen0B3KLFnOrxLKVdxVFLUHgbfCu0t1ARJaE7eCbrrsiiPbsxByRIBC9vBUAu2PkxjRm-6P30VPr_WxJeIKj8g0L9Ep-gU9Te0G8bjUMsDwMMqbWel8oLbBk78/s1600-h/kung_fu_panda.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 205px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUluQ-ku1QyOjvO9Pi-Hyen0B3KLFnOrxLKVdxVFLUHgbfCu0t1ARJaE7eCbrrsiiPbsxByRIBC9vBUAu2PkxjRm-6P30VPr_WxJeIKj8g0L9Ep-gU9Te0G8bjUMsDwMMqbWel8oLbBk78/s320/kung_fu_panda.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5288805914895438418" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmXhv4eivnqkKH0y2eQ83vsoe1Z7fhG6LHtoZHQZW3UjVIAXtkKeDB8Xz-VnvKNJLHiU16mkCkAFBARaWOJGU5WBStEEuq2UdI6Il2Dv_Ca9QlgmlPfS4wXsqXEoUr-S1JALGasOlyDmau/s1600-h/monstersvsaliens.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 288px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmXhv4eivnqkKH0y2eQ83vsoe1Z7fhG6LHtoZHQZW3UjVIAXtkKeDB8Xz-VnvKNJLHiU16mkCkAFBARaWOJGU5WBStEEuq2UdI6Il2Dv_Ca9QlgmlPfS4wXsqXEoUr-S1JALGasOlyDmau/s320/monstersvsaliens.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5288806105936213682" border="0" /></a><span style="font-family:arial;">Class 3 is an introduction to acting and this is where we get into the meat and potato of why I want to become an animator. </span> <span style="font-family:arial;"> Looking forward to learning a lot about acting in this class and how it is applied in animation. I polished my last assignment and put together a pogress reel for both classes 1 & 2. The concentration level increased dramatically in class 2. Next time I'll try to chose simple projects so that I don't stress for more time. Sandy proved to be a valuable friend when I needed help tackling the dreaded gimble lock - thank you Sandy. </span><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: arial;">One of our classmates from the first class, Casey McDermott, landed a job at Rhythm & Hues. Congratulations! Casey is a talented animator and a wonderful person who has a great potential to go far in this industry. He helped me rig the fishing rod in my final assignment. I wish him the best. I also owe him a lunch ;o)</span></div><div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: arial;">Another friend of mine, Teresa Nord, graduated Animation Mentor - congratulations Teresa! I met Teresa at Martin Hash's get together a couple of years ago when we worked on The Tin Woodman of Oz, a volunteer film project of ameteur animators using the Animation:Master software. Teresa's dream is to work for Pixar and I believe she will ventually end up there because I saw in her a burning desire to succeed and a strong passion for the art. All she has to do now is polish her demo reel and gain as much experience as possible working in the industry. All the best Teresa!</span><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: arial;">My mentor, Peter Kelly, also got his job back at ILM, congratulations on that. I think ILM is the place for me because of the array of projects they work on, most of which are behind the scenes, which I like.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: arial;">During the course I joined MySpace, Facebook, and Linkedin, just to keep on the up & up with the rest of the animators. I also did a small acting gig promoting a translation software being developed by the Stanford Research Institute. I'll post the clip if I can get a copy.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: arial;">Anyway, that's all for now - I hope you enjoy the clip. Could it be that George was, somehow, influenced by that image and reintroduced his own version for his film? I don't remember him saying that. It amazes me, however, when I saw ROJ I did not make the connection but now that I watch SB again the connection is made. And just to be sure that I'm not the only one making this connection, I asked my son when we watched it and he also immediately made that connection without hesitation. </span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: arial;">So the next time your kid scoffs at Sleeping Beauty, it might be a good opportunity for an intellectual discussion about how history influences the future. And in my animation journey it certanly made me appreciate the contributions of of the artists of the golden age to the rest of the generations after them. </span>Dharhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05569381869808242879noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6317675630674465583.post-53660867948711126762008-11-23T15:03:00.000-08:002008-11-23T15:18:46.598-08:00Class 2 update - 208<span style="font-family:arial;">Since each assignment takes 3 weeks to complete, updates in this blog become few and far in between. Right now I'm working on the last assignment, but I thought I put up my last two assignments.<br /><br />This one was done in week 4. The emphasis is on weight shift. This is also where we start shooting video references of ourselves as part of the assignment to study the different mechanics and forces that are involved in a simple turn around.<br /><br /><br /></span><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dwvqVLVS6WoAvDreyWiK7Aaon3BmrWUoAGQxVSLt90vnChdQMndZwFCP8KN8yr8bHMYdH5BNynDWq9NTGh2PQ' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe><br /><br /><span style="font-family:arial;">Mid term assignment is where we get to use Stewie without arms. The complexity of animating an added torso and head increased exponentially. I found myself going over the allotted frame limit. This is also the first time I add sound to my work.<br /><br /><br /></span><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dzUCpV-A1EhFbdSyunZN_amn2r2A3V0qTJUhlo5Ll26EjcY39hW2xlQTkwev7SmqzfFx38Op_0SYF_ORZYu' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe>Dharhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05569381869808242879noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6317675630674465583.post-89392016506481000252008-11-09T21:56:00.000-08:002008-11-09T22:12:26.419-08:00An evening with animation legend Richard Williams<span style="font-family:arial;">It was an exciting evening (Sunday, 11-2-2008). It has become one of the most popular animation books in the industry. Although Richard's main purpose of the seminar is to promote his tutorial DVDs (16 DVDs of 100s of clips that he animated to illustrate his lecture). I liked the fact that the format of the presentation was more of a Q & A than just a "shameless promotional". He began by showing the promotional clip which started with the animated logo http://www.theanimatorssurvivalkit.com/logo.html The rest of the evening continued with an equal mix of clips from the DVDs and Q & A.<br /></span><br /><span style="font-family:arial;">When asked what can be done about animation as a medium to ad</span><span style="font-family:arial;">vance beyond the children and family entertainment so that it can be taken seriously not just as a form of telling high browed narratives but as a fine art; Richard replied "I'm making one of those!" His answer, in a nut shell, was to just do it. But the problem is 'the golden rule' (Whoever has the gold, makes the rule), so if you want to get backing from somebody, they want to make children stuff. This is the reason Richard is selling his work in order to be able to produce his own work.<br /><br /><br /></span><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj24ZJeZnFf8uq-OsNybI-4NIChMqc6ock0ZQq46QQKRmd0VQT-R27WXpz2YYcIYF3x7KS4t49WW6mV6FQGg2vfVbZkJ0WAd5CkxrtKJTHqh4ywOV2UZjSKlIQ7Qz2J1jGT2UP43M48-xrZ/s1600-h/DSC01361+%28Small%29.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj24ZJeZnFf8uq-OsNybI-4NIChMqc6ock0ZQq46QQKRmd0VQT-R27WXpz2YYcIYF3x7KS4t49WW6mV6FQGg2vfVbZkJ0WAd5CkxrtKJTHqh4ywOV2UZjSKlIQ7Qz2J1jGT2UP43M48-xrZ/s320/DSC01361+%28Small%29.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5266907146569093234" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-family:arial;">He dodged a question about his opinion of The Thief and the Cobbler, I guess its a sensitive spot with him.<br /><br />He didn't reveal much about his film other than he had the idea for it since he was 15. He does not want anyone else to help him with it. He mentioned how relieved he was when Spielberg took over his small company of animators. He does not like running the business side of animation.<br /></span><br /><span style="font-family:arial;">Watched some incredible footage about lip sync. He relayed Milt Kahl telling him the secret of lip sync, he told him that Jim Henson, the Muppet guy, is the genius because he realized what no other puppeteer realized before him, he is progressing the action. The secret to lip sync is progression.<br /><br />A good quesion was asked "How do you feel about the attitude that there is no point in animating human beings (realism) when you got action films?" In summation, Richard said that animators discovered how realistic animation does not work back in the 30s. It lookd floaty, unbelievable. They tried using a reference for Snow White walking. The important part of artistic animation is that you only show the essence of the idea. In realism there is so much detail being conveyed that the viewer will become detached from the subject.<br /></span><br /><span style="font-family:arial;">Richard is not of the opinion that 3D animation is an outgrowth of 2D. He said that 2D animators are scribblers while 3D is hi tech marionettes. Different animals.<br /><br />Another great clip about eyes. The eyes tell the story. We watch the eyes more than the mouth.<br /><br />About facing frustration during animating, he advised to research your work before you animate.<br /><br />He told some charming stories of his work with Milt Kahl, Art Ba</span><span style="font-family:arial;">bbit, Ken Harris and other animation legends and revealed some little golden animation nuggets of wisdom that he referred to as little secrets. They are no secret now, but his way of relaying them was funny and entertaining. He also relayed a funny story where actor Michael Caine gave an acting session where he said to his students "If you see something you like, steal it! Because they did" Of course Richard also said that he doesn't like it when people steal his work, but I took it in the context of inspiration.<br /><br />The theater was full, 300 people attended. This is the first time th</span><span style="font-family:arial;">at I was among so many individuals with similar interest as mine. Quite a few Animation Mentor students but the majority were SF State or College of Art students. Their enthusiasm to Richard's lecture tells me that this industry has a lot of steam in it. Last week was the end of class 1. There really was no assignment per se but Bobby wanted us to upload a progress reel containing all of our work in the class, so, here it is</span><br /><br /><br /><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dwDdArOJvBG_oA_CLyg_shLutQJGDdL75Hz9eqghvUSxvA6FP3c3qgBFJniKQ26G8KckaSU3_BDxCTc5N1kJw' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe><br /><br /><span style="font-family: arial;">I wanted to keep polishing the Laurel & Hardy walk cycle but there seem to be a glitch in the Maya AM tools and since school is out for this week I figured I upload what I got and polish it later.</span> <span style="font-family: arial;">This class has been an eye opener for me when it comes to planning the work. I learned how to plan everything by blocking and layering every detail. I also learned how to exaggerate my poses. Elliott Roberts has been great and gave me a very good review. I will keep in touch with him since I know he has tons more knowledge to offer, besides being a great guy to chat with.<br /><br />On to Class two.<br /></span>Dharhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05569381869808242879noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6317675630674465583.post-61250019486104921862008-08-31T22:39:00.000-07:002008-08-31T23:48:41.569-07:00Class 109<span style="font-family:arial;">This is where we get to experiment with walk cycles which is pretty exciting because this is arguably the most difficult part of animation, as admitted by the professionals as well. But that's not what I want to talk about. I want to talk about the other assignment, the concerned pose.</span><br /><div><span style="font-family:Arial;"></span></div><div><span style="font-family:Arial;">Concerned! Now that is one vague emotion to try and illustrate on a faceless character such as Stu. What I found frustrating about this assignment is the lack of a good pose that clearly illustrates (in silhouette) someone who has a concern. I googled many references for "concerned", but I either come up with previous AM students' work - which had a certain sameness to it - or pictures of actors where most of the concern was in the face. So how do you illustrate someone who is concerned with only the body? I recorded my thoughts in the hope of finding an answer to the basic of posing in animation; the line of action. What line of action best describes a person is concerned? The first thought of a concern pose almost always reads either more like a person is thinking, or is devastated. Worry is closer to concern but only to a lighter degree, yet the question still begs for an answer:</span></div><br /><div><br /><br /><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dy8Qix0jL0BE0ohgUjFTdmIyMaBAUpjLqUpBKqcEhI6-G3Vw5c99XmgNjoWtJF6yagDB5sBrYIE8bigub-uvw' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div><br /><br /><div><span style="font-family:arial;">I don't know if my ideas about what line of action is most appropriate for the concerned pose have any merit, but I wish there was a book or a blog out there that explains, in detail, the correlation between emotional states and lines of action.</span></div><br /><div><span style="font-family:Arial;">In my search for a pose that is unique I found the old Coppertone ad to be the most appealing, and since most students at Animation Mentor are too young to reember this ad</span></div><div><br /></div><p><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5240929233098885106" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_Vtu1jW9CO_DbFw7nQQ9aJ7NsSvMagXPpnNKQhQvlCjiQyul-1qEp39rbuCF7wgKiZ7zLj9dlFNZdNW-MGqAwBdclqcbzcoza3a-Lcdfbf0GA6qxHzpo8Ncr-tnWBWYpIX_BN5AN-CSag/s320/coppertone.jpg" border="0" /> </p><p><span style="font-family:arial;">I siezed the opportunity to pose Stu in that fashion because I think the pose, in all its adorable cuteness, represents concern without going overboard into other emotional states that everyone (including myself) seem to fall prey to.</span></p><br /><p><span style="font-family:Arial;"></span><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5240930086770226994" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuM0nwxTA3Fcv2EJjeS0aqLaB4ehO46EiNrNPXZrfeeD4L1puhV4Xh3GRoI3Rof8axJ9_wup_PefCHxcKhKhUoegBurvUuXg_WwuM3lwJ3VmvHXcmwDxlVXYardjAefwM7XADYnKv-ClPR/s320/Concerned.jpg" border="0" /><br /><span style="font-family:arial;"></span><span style="font-family:arial;">I am still searching for that illusive connection between vague emotions and the line of action, and I hope that someone will discover it.</span><br /><span style="font-family:arial;"></span></p><p><span style="font-family:arial;">In the meantime, here are some more examples of my work in Class 1. With only two weeks left this is by far one of the most positive experiences I have in my life.</span><br /></p><p><span style="font-family:arial;">In this next clip is an exercise in overlapping action.
